Outdoor experiments were conducted to investigate the sea cucumber (Apostichopus japonicas Selenka) in earthen ponds. Four kinds of shelter (scallops cage, woven bags, sunshade nets and hollow brick) and the changes of species composition, density and biomass of benthic microalgae were analyzed, while the effects of four kinds of shelter on growth and survival of sea cucumber were also studied. The results indicated that the abundance and distribution of diatoms determined the total variation of the benthic microalgae abundance. The average lever of benthic microalgal biomass were 3.46, 2.46, 2.77 and 3.82 μg.cm-2, respectively. There are significant differences of sea cucumber’s growth and survival rate among the four kinds of shelter. The growth of sea cucumber on hollow brick was the slowest, but the survival rate (66.5%) and the yield (192.8 g?m-2) were the highest. The survival rate of sea cucumber on scallop cage was 48.7%, and the yield of it was 169.8 g?m-2, which were only next to hollow brick. The survival rate and yield of sea cucumber on woven bag or sunshade net were low. The results showed that the survival rate and the yield of juvenile sea cucumber in earthen ponds was closely related to the biomass of benthic microalgae on the shelter.

Changes in the environment of the sea entrance areas of Mulan River and Qiulu River in Xinghua Bay were evaluated through the analysis of eleven years of monitoring data, combined with the changes of the pollution sources. The environmental quality in 2018 was also evaluated in order to provide reference for the remediation of Mulan River watershed in 2019. The results of the evaluation were as follows: 1) The environment of the sea entrance areas of Mulan River and Qiulu River in Xinghua Bay had no improvement from 2008 to 2018. DIN and DIP were still the main pollutants. 2) The content of heavy metals in water environment did not exceed the standard. Hg (2009a) and Cu (2018a) in the sediments exceeds standard. Environmental pressure sediments of heavy metals were higher than water. Higher levels of Cu and Hg in water and sediments than other heavy metals was observed. 3) The seawater quality of the sea entrance areas of both rivers exceeded the standard in 100% of the samples in 2018. The main pollutants were active phosphate and inorganic nitrogen. It was more prominent in the sea entrance area of Mulan River. The nitrogen in the water, phosphorus and sediment in that area were all exceeding the standard, while other evaluated indicators could still meet the needs of marine functional zoning.

Abalone culture in Fujian Province is concentrated in the coastal bay. But the survival rate of abalone culture has dropped sharply from over 90% to around 50%, because of the serious ageing of water and sediment as well as the destruction of water environment by decades of large-scale high-density disordered farming. The economic benefits of abalone farming and industrial development has been seriously affected. The areas outside the bay are very suitable for abalone culture due to their advantages of broad space, high water exchange rate, strong self-purification ability and dark excellent water quality. However, the biggest challenge of safe aquaculture is the poor performance of existing abalone farming facilities and the harsh marine environment outside the bay. A facility named Long-line Abalone Culture Facility System in the bottom waters of the bay has been developed by the author which has the ability to avoid typhoon damage. The equipment consists of two parts: long-lined Abalone culture facility and mechanized production equipment. This paper reports the design and preliminary experiment of the long-lined Abalone culture facility. The preliminary experiment showed that the design proposal is reasonable owing to the ability to avoid typhoon damage and operate mechanically.
